Webinar #10 – Your Questions, Live – will be Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 1PM
U.S. Pacific Daylight time.
Caution: In the United States, March 11th is the start of
Daylight Saving Time. I’m assuming that GoToWebinar will handle this
properly and send registered attendees the correct information. I’m also not
including a GMT equivalent this time because I’m very likely to get it wrong.
I’ll attempt to send a status update – something like “webinar one hour from now” – on the morning of the webinar on both Twitter and Facebook.

Agenda
No agenda!
This is another “open” webinar where I’ll simply take your questions live and try not to sound too lost or confused.
So register, via the link below and come prepared with your questions.
The Questions
Questions and answers from the Webinar are posted here as they are transcribed:
-
Does wireless internet slow down my computer? It’s tempting to think that having a wired connection to your computer would make the internet faster. It might, but typically, it doesn’t.
-
How do I manage a large number of client workstations? Managing the configuration of a large number of computers can be daunting. There are solutions for management but it’s not something I’m familiar with.
-
How do I block trojans and the man sending them to me? Repeatedly getting trojans or any form of malware simply shouldn’t happen. To resolve this we need to drop back to basic security principles.
-
Does secure deletion protect me? What can a subpoena get?
-
Can USB ports go bad? USB connection problems can be due to many things, including bad ports, bad software, or bad devices. I’ll discuss the difficulty in telling which is which.
-
Why do my files get locked? Files can get locked for several reasons, but the most common by far is simply that some other program is currently accessing them.
-
Will not having a paging file slow down my system? The paging file is used by Windows to manage situations where more memory is needed that is present. Not having one shouldn’t impact speed.
-
How do I remove a D: partition? Many computers come with a pre-configured restore partition, often drive D:. If you backup properly, it’s not needed; I’ll look at recovering the space.
-
Why does my PC restart itself when trying to boot off of a Linux Ubuntu CD? The Ubuntu distribution Linux is a capable and popular operating system that supports many hardware configurations. Many, though, may not mean all.
-
Why do I get “Not Responding?” ‘Not Responding’ happens when a program hangs or takes too long to do something. In Internet Explorer, that’s often due to add-ons.
-
How do I remove my personal information from a machine before giving it away? Recent news reports show that much personal information is simply and unknowingly given away when old computers are discarded. I’ll look at what to do.
-
How do you burn a CD? Burning a CD or DVD is complicated by the fact that there are three distinct types of things you might want to burn. I’ll look at what that means.
-
Where do I find the TCPIP settings to set a static IP address in Windows 7? TCP/IP settings can be used to configure an assigned static IP address, override DNS settings and more. I’ll show you exactly where they are.
-
Should I wait for Windows 8? With the release of Windows 8 Preview some folks are wondering if Windows 7 is soon to disappear. Nothing could be further from the truth.
-
Can you disguise an IP address? IP addresses are fundamental to the way that the internet works. Spammers use botnets to send from hijacked machines and thus from their IP addresses.

Post-Webinar
If you missed the webinar, keep coming back to this very page. The agenda items that I covered above will eventually become links to articles that contain the recorded video segments from the webinar. More on that here: How do I view your past webinars?
If you have technical questions, please ask them here on the ask-a-question page.
If you have general comments about the webinar, ideas for future topics, or thoughts about what would work better, please visit http://ask-leo.com/feedback and drop me your thoughts there. I can’t promise to respond to them all, but I definitely read them all.
Future Webinars
Rather than hide them somewhere, here are some ideas that have been suggested for future webinars or things that might make the cut if we have enough time:
-
Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Google+ – What are they, how do they work, and do you care?
-
Do you need a swap file? – It depends. I’ll review what it depends on.
-
Document organization – My Documents, but then what? Using folders, naming conventions, and other techniques to keep track of what’s on your computer can be simple.
-
Setting a default mail program – How to change what happens when you click an email link or click Send To.
-
Master of your own domain – Domain purchase, website hosting, and setting up your own email address.
