I got a blue screen error, what should I do?

//
I was surfing the net with Google Chrome. No other applications open (Norton was running in the background). All of a sudden I got a blue screen with a frowny face and the message: “Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some error info, and then we’ll restart for you. If you’d like to know more, you can search online later for this error: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.”

The computer shut down and then restarted and I re logged in and everything seems to be fine. I’m not sure how to interpret the error message and am not sure where the “collected data” went. Would like your advice on what to do next – do I pursue the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT topic or ignore the event or something else?

In short: back up regularly (you’re doing that already, right? 🙂 ), and carry on like nothing happened.

Until, or unless, it starts happening more often. Then things get complicated.

Why Does My Computer Blue Screen?

//
I keep getting a “blue screen of death” and the following error message: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and a bunch of other lines and the computer locks up. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

Unfortunately, with only that to go on, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of possible answers. To really diagnose, we’d need a lot more information about the system it’s happening on, the software and hardware installed, and what was happening at the time the problem happened.

I’ll throw out some guidelines, so perhaps you can narrow down the diagnosis.

What Do I Do About a Blue Screen on Shutdown?

//
When shutting down or restarting my computer, it freezes in the shut down process and then I get the blue screen of death. It’s been happening a lot more lately. I took pictures of it with my iPhone to see what it says but it’s too much to write out – but there’s something in there about a driver.

Blue screens can happen for a variety of reasons. These days, driver issues are probably number one on that list, tied with problems at shut down.

Why Does My Monitor Go Dark for a Few Seconds?

Leo, I’ve got an HP Pavilion H8 1017, which I love dearly. I’m on a Windows 7 operating system and it’s standalone. I use it mostly for graphic work: Photoshop, video editing, and the like. Lately, my screen goes black for about 10 seconds whenever I stop what I’m doing and open another program. I’m afraid that this may be a prelude to the blue screen of death. I do disk cleans and defrags regularly. I have McAfee protection and AOL computer checkup and backup. Please help! I don’t want my HP to become the recently departed.

A screen going dark isn’t likely to be a computer problem; it’s probably a monitor problem. Your HP is a desktop model, which means you have a separate monitor.

I have a similar problem with my machine. After doing some research, I have a couple of ideas.

Let’s start by getting some of the obvious things out of the way.
