What is DirectX?
DirectX is nothing more than software that interfaces between your game or other graphic intensive software and the graphics hardware in your machine. Ultimately it’s the graphics hardware, not your motherboard as a whole, that’s going to be at play here.
The issue is that DirectX 11 has a certain set of requirements that it expects the graphics card to be capable of supporting. It does seem that each version of DirectX adds a few more requirements of the graphics cards.
If you look at graphics cards, especially higher performance gaming cards, you’ll see that they actually list on their box (or on their spec sheet) that they are DirectX 9-, 10- or 11-compatible. That means that they have what’s required to run that version of the DirectX software.
How do I update it?
You probably don’t need to go out and get a new motherboard. Assuming that your existing hardware does not support DirectX 11, you’ll probably need to get a new video card, assuming of course your computer can accept a video card replacement or expansion card.
In other words, go out and look for a video card that will fit in your machine and support DirectX 11.
The video card will actually either come with DirectX 11 on its installation media, or you’ll need to download it from the Microsoft site, install it, and install your game.
After that, you should be good to go.
If you have an older computer, it might not have a graphic card port that can handle a graphic card with the latest version of DirectX. In that case you would need a new motherboard, or more probably a new computer.
