Tip of the Day: PDF Was Never Intended to Be Editable

Some of the more frustrating questions I get are from folks trying to make a change to a PDF. I’m not talking about filling in a PDF form or signing a PDF document; I mean changing or rearranging the content of the PDF file.

PDF was never meant for that.

PDF is best thought of as equivalent to a physical sheet of paper. Yes, you can take a (physical) eraser to the paper or grab your scissors and glue to cut and paste, but the results are usually a mess.

The same is true for PDF. Some tools allow you to “edit” the PDF or convert it to an editable format, but the results are usually a mess.

PDF files are generated from files that were created in an editable format. For example, you might have a Word document in .docx format and “Save to” or “Print as” PDF. It’s the Word document that you edit, not the PDF…

…unless the only thing you have is the PDF. If that’s the case, prepare for things to get messy.
