When I insert a CD or DVD into my DVD ROM the computer freezes. What should I do?
Iās suspect the device drivers for the DVD drive, myself.
You didnāt mention which version of Windows. Assuming itās XP, Iād do the

A friend gave me his old PC to play with/overhaul. 500MHz AMD K6-2 with 64MB PC100 memory and a 10GB HDD on a MSI-5191 MoBo. I formatted the drive and did a fresh install of Win98SE, installed all the necessary updates and drivers etc. Now I have exactly the same problem as you! As soon as I insert a CD (audio or data), everything freezes totally ā so badly, in fact, that even ctrl-alt-del is useless. Have tried several different CD and DVD drives ā no change of behaviour. Itās so frustrating, as in every other respect, the machine works fine. Am now considering stripping it out for spare parts!
I am experiencing the same thing with my brand new notebook. I have been looking into the problem think it is probably the Interrupt the CD-ROM uses or the frequency of the noise the CD-ROM puts out when it spins up. Let me know if you have any questions or advise.
I have a Rock Quadra DTS Pro. Its not even 6 moths old and has beein doin the same things since i bought itā¦
Any one had any luck??

Are any of you running nero burning rom? Iāve heard the InCD feature in the nero pack can cause such lock ups. Iāve just uninstalled the InCD feature on nero, so weāll see if that helps my lock up problems. Sorry I canāt be of more help.
When I insert a CD, the computer is not recognizing it. The computer prompts me to insert a disk. What do I do in this situation?
hey, you must update your firmware to resolve the problem. If you need more information just email me at madmac@hotmail.com
My problem is a bit different, when I try to load multiple disc games it loads the first 2 then freezes before the game fully loads. I tried a bunch of differant games without success. I about to launch it but the system is only 6 months old. I need help!
i have A kinda the same problem, i sold my old PIII
450 to my mom but before i did i switched the cd-rom
for a cd-burner , now my brother tell me that every audio cd mp3 or standard freezes the computer regaurdless of what sotware he uses, i never use my pc to play audio, so i think i wasnāt connecting everything
any way, it might be that little wire.
i find out in the next 24
ps. the pc has a sound card
I had the same problem till this evening, I have an IBM think centre (office pc) and when i went to the ibm site, sure enough, there was a firmware update available that resolved my problem. For the guys who built their own pcās I guess you could check out the manufacturers site.
Best of luck.
I removed INCD from Nero and everything works fine.
my computer freezes when i insert a cd into the cdrw drive and it will not read any disks.
I have this problem on one of two nearly identical systems I built a few years ago. Both XP Pro op sys, P4 (1-2.8GHz & 1-3Ghz, both using ASUS mb and ASUS CD-R/RW & LG DVD RW drives. I was sure that the one ASUS CD-R/RW was the problem. I had tried switching the master slave combo, switching IDE ports, using separate IDE ports (as the HD is using SATA)and replacing ribbon cables. I know InCD causes some problems so I eliminated it from startup. I recently replaced both optical drives with one CD/DVD combo unit from LiteOn, updated the firmware but continue to have the problem. I also switched IDE ports with no affect. I doubt it is a hardware problem as I do not have the issue with my other system (also recently installed the same LiteOn DVD). Seems to me that itās either an XP problem or some other s/w the wife has downloaded and is running in the background. The problem has been there since it was built I believe.
Hi my notebook has a problem installing software.
When I put my cd into the rom it doesnt open up by itself, then I go into my computer and still it wont open it says insert the cd in the rom . What can I do trying to install my antivirus program help.
If anyone is still having this problem, this worked for me ā
Change the IDE setup in BIOS to P-ATA from S-ATA.
For some reason it switched to S-ATA.
I have a 98second edition, when I put a cd in the CD Rom the computer shuts down
when i put my dvd drive into my computer it wont read any disks it just gos to a blue skreen with codes my computer is a win98 can you help please
I see I am not the only one with this problem. Brand new system, Win XP pro w/all updates, Pioneer DVD RW (P_ATA) on Gigabyte MB (intel 965BX chipset) Core 2 Duo E6400, sata hard drives. When I insert a CD or DVD usually the system freezes. I may have Nero INCD installed, I will try removing it. Already tried the BIOS settings and reinstalling drivers w/o success.
I have a system with windows xp 64 pro with every update I can find for every component in my system. I have an intel e6600 core 2 duo. I have an asus P5B deluxe Motherboard (intel 965 chipset), I have 3 sata harddrives. The DVD drive is connected to the only parrallel port (which is controlled by a jmicron chip). When i boot the computer, the bios says that the jmicron controll is controlling my Liteon dvd drive.
I have the same exact problem as Thomas Canup: Whenever I put a dvd/cd into the drive it will freeze momentarily (10 seconds or so) then will be fine⦠until i access it again. Watching dvds is impossible with the cyclic jerkiness (fine for a while, then jerky for a while, then fine again only to repeat the cycle. Whenever I burn a dvd, it completely 100% locks up my computer while the āwriting lead inā step, however as soon as that part is finished and the bulk of the writing is going on, system returns to normal, then as writing lead out kicks in, it freezes again. Also, ejecting the disk causes computer to freeze, just as it does loading a disc.
It is fair to say that I am not short on memory (2GB). Also I do not have normal system issues: I run all the latest games at high settings smoothly and flawlessly, even if I am running something intensive in the background. Its just that damned dvd drive! Any help would be amazing and greatly appreciated!
I had this problem too with my new computer, I first thought it was a bad DVD drive. But I tried it on my old system and it worked fine. My new computer has a Core 2 Duo E6400 and Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 motherboard. I was doing everything and anything I could think of to try to fix it and I somehow managed to fixed it. My DVD drive doesnāt freeze my computer anymore.
I was curious as to why that happened so I did some research and I read something about DMA modes can turn into PIO modes. ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817472 ) PIO mode is an old mode for DVD drives to transfer data to the rest of the computer. It uses a lot of CPU power, When I had this problem and put DVD in the drive it would take almost 50 percent of my CPU resource. It would probably be close to 100 if I didnāt have duo core.
Sorry, but I donāt really have a solution for anyone else that has this problem. Iām not sure what I did to fix it.
Yup I have once again joined the club of having this stupid problem with having the comp. freez when inserting a CD, DVD with basically anything kind of files on it. And I have found that for some reason Windows randomly changes the transfer mode of the Drives to PIO and this is NOT to be used!
Go to the Device Manager and properties on the IDE and then Primary Channel and set it to ālet BIOS select transfer modeā and restart. This should help! It can take a few times to do this for windows to actually understand what you want, so keep trying it a couple of times before sending the computor into orbit!
Iāve had this happen before. It wonāt happen on every system because every system has its own way of addressing IDE devices. Usually what causes this is that the drive is failing to respond when its state is queried. IE, it reports disc insert but then fails to respond that it is ready to read the disc. Try a different drive. Also, another thing that can cause this is ācomboā drives. These are drives that say they can burn CDs and read DVDs. Iāve found that usually the cheap ones will cause your system to hang when you insert a DVD. Finally, this problem can be caused by a misaligned, damaged or dirty laser lens. You can try using a lens cleaner but this wonāt fix a misaligned laser.
A brand new pc with P945D 3.4Ghz and XP Home: PC freezes when trying to install a program:: Nero Incd uninstalled and everything works fine. Thanks for the tip
Building a new PC ā Intel D945vs mob with 3.2 Intel p4 D duo core processor, XP Pro, and a lightscribe DVD RW and a and ran into this same problem. Everything was going well untill I began installing software. The clues above were EXACTLY CORRECT. I had installed the NERO suite that came with the DVD. As soon as unistalled, everything worked fine. INCD4 was the version on my suite. Donāt know if the same effect on newer versions. Good luck.
Having the same issue as above: C2D w/ P5B Deluxe/WIFI. System would freeze sometimes when I put a CD in. Thought it was the JMicron controller first (since that was handling the IDE channel that the burner was connected to).
However I also installed the INCD thing that came with the Nero bundled, Iāve just now uninstalled it and am going to see if that fixes everything. So far so goodā¦
just wondering if there are other suggestionsā¦
just got a new hard drive, reinstalled OS (XP SP2 and all updates)⦠donāt have Nero/InCD, all IDE channels set to DMA, and the system freezes randomly when inserting a CD or DVD (dual drive)⦠tried turning off all autorun options, but same problemā¦
any other troubleshooting thoughts other than replacing the drive⦠iām afraid a new drive will have the same problemā¦
thankx,
sj
Thanks Jos Van Leeuw for the advice on uninstalling Nero Incd, that worked perfectly. I was trying to install a new printer and that idea worked great. Thank you again!
Open your Administrative Tools, Services applet. Right click open the āpropertiesā dialog on each of the two InCD services. Stop them and change them to ādisabledā. Problems solvedā¦
Iām betting that, in some instances, the problem has to do with loading Jmicron drivers. These drivers are SATA/RAID only drivers and loading them will mess up the Jmicron controlled IDE port for running IDE drives. Jmicron say that if you want to use the IDE connector for optical drives ⦠enable Jmicron and set to IDE in BIOS and do NOT install ANY jmicron drivers.
I have a similar problem, whenever I insert a CD, Original/HomeBrew, Windows 2K freezes, but itās a 52X LG CD-ROM, so thereās no Nero Installed, Anyway, if I let the CD on the drive, after restart, I can read the CD like a charm, but if I try to change it, Windows freezes again. It wont happend if I start in Safe Mode, but, Who wantās to live in safe mode???
The 52x LG is just fine, I puted it in another computer and it works great, so, It should be a Software problem. Iāve tryed changing PIO/DMA Modes, but the problem persistsā¦
Any suggestion???
Gotta same problem.
Solution:
Device manager>IDE channel>properties>advanced>
transfer mode select to DMA
No more problems!
This problem is caused by conflict of DVD Drive ID, to solve it Change the DVD drive to Primary
I HAVE 20 CDāS,AND THEY WERE RECORDED OFF MY OLD COMPUTER BEFORE IT CRASHED ETC, NOW i HAVE A NEW COMPUTER E MACHINE..WITH VISTA, AND i PUT IN A CD NOTHING HAPPENS ā¦THIS VISTA IS THE WORST THING SINCE HIGH TAXES.

thanks leo and engineer iāve been having this problem forat least 2 years! And then i realised that iāve got the nero package with the incd program. So far so good . It is a seperate program called āahead INCDā or similar name. Simply go to control panel then add/remove programs and then uninstall.
burned files to a cd then later tried to open them but he comp keeps freezing. then tried to move them off the cd to my desktop but only 3 files will move then the comp freezes again. went online and found a free software that was supposed to check cd for bad files and ignore them and allow the good files to be moved. it freezes up too. any ideas?
Gotta same problem.
Solution:
Device manager>IDE channel>properties>advanced>
transfer mode select to DMA
No more problems!

My CD drive is SATA and I just changed my hard SATA hard drive to IDE. Could this be the reason my screen goes horizontal and machine freezes when I try to use my cd drive? Never had this problem before the IDE.
I just got the same problem. I already check the transfer mode and it is already set to DMA.
I also did update on the computer but Im still getting the same problem. What Iāve notice is there are 2 Primary and 2 Secondary IDE Channel showing up. Any suggestions?
I have the same problem, but with DVD9 only
any suggestions ?
I donāt Have Ahead INCE and the mode is set to DMA
I have the same issue with a Dell D620 laptop but only when I have an external monitor plugged in. I have tried it with both monitors running and with only the external monitor running and it freezes. If I turn off the external monitor and use the internal only it works fine. I have checked all drivers and they are at the latest revs. Any ideas?
The cause could be the power pack overheating and shutting off.
I had this trouble with my cd rom drives and found the computer power pack vents were clogged with dust.
I cleaned the fan and vents with a vacuum cleaner and have had no trouble since.
please please help me..I had important work documents that I saved to a cd since I was using another computer. Now I put the cd in my computer and it wont open. It freezes my computer.
