Trying to connect two computers to the internet, one says that there is an IP address conflict. Why?

Hi, I want to connect my desktop and laptop to a LinkSys hub so that I
can access my high speed DSL internet on either computer, often simultaneously.
However, my laptop says that there is an IP address conflict and subsequently
disables the connection. How can I fix this problem — I can’t get another ISP,
so I have to share this IP address.

To start with, if you’re truly using a HUB and not a Router then that’s 90% of
the problem right there. A router of some sort is required to share a single
internet address among multiple computers. It’s fairly easy, and they’re not
terribly expensive.

The other 10% sounds like it might be configuration issue. I would
double check the TCP/IP configuration to ensure that it is set to
“automatically receive an IP address”.

  1. How do I make the internet sharing for windows 2000 Advanced Server Domain to other clients computer on the network by using 4 ports switch. I assigned all the computer with static IP. They all are connecting and i can get access on files, drives on my network, but when I used the server to dial through the ISP using 56K moden I enable the internet sharing on the modem but the client computer doesn’t have internet. How could I make this work for everything computer? Do i need to buy Router instead of Switch to be able to do that kind of work?

  2. Hi people
From my point of view i think router is the best. Because it has a fire wall in it and its very easy to configure. You just have to plug your computer’s eithernet wire in to the router and you have to use the link which is given in their manual. Like……….. and when configure your router using that link , then you will be able to use internet in to your computer very easily.

  4. You need to enable WEP or WPA on your wireless connection. That means a password or key will be required to be able to use your wireless.

  13. You have to configure the PC’s (that have Internet connection only) “C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\networks” file so that it will act as a DNS server.

Introuduce the both Ethernets network address in that file.

    For example,
Middle Desktop-Pc have 2 Net Cards.

Step1: Now add this two networks( & the Desktop-Pc’s “C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\networks” file.

Step 2: Desktop-PC side Net card that is connected with your Notebook, go the TCP/IP configuration Properties, use ( as a DNS and gateway address also. From Advanced TCP/IP Settings make this gateway priority 1.

Step 3: Notebook net Card, go the TCP/IP configuration Properties, use ( as a DNS and gateway ( address also.

  20. hey i have verizon wireless internet and i would like to use my laptop and my pc at the same time is this possible by using a cable to connect the both of them to the same modem? If so what are the steps that i need to take. kindof make a home network using one modem?

  21. I have two desktop pc, in which one is connected with brodband. i want to use brodband from second pc also, then how to connect both pc for above

  22. the answer is to ask your internet service provider to give separate ip addresses to each computer.then you can connect both onto the internet at the same time.after you connect it will show a seperate connection other then local area connection.that is your internet.the problem is your isp gives both computers the same ip address so two computers cant access the same ip address at the same time.if you do this you can connect two computers onto the internet at the same time using a modem with two ports.if you want this in English email me at {removed} and ill show you with pictures.

  23. I had reliance dsl internet connection, and i install a router to it for use net connection in two system, but net is coming alternate, if net is coming in 1st pc so its not coming secong pc, if it coming in 2nd pc its not coming 1st pc.

Offhand I’d say that the router isn’t properly connected or configured.

  24. are the routers that comcast retns to you as good a quality as one you might purchase? I want to keep my desktop running as well as using a laptop and I pay for the modem anyway. They will offer me a free router since I have the modem renting from them anyway. Is the one they offer as good a quality as it shuld be or would you recommend buying your own? LIke I said, I rent the modem so there is no extra charge for the router? My friend has a router from comcast and says it doesnt always have a connection and my daughter had one from Direcct TV and she always had a connection problem. Why would this be? Thank you very much for your help.
