Why would the "Reply with Changes" command be grayed
out? If I understand correctly the document you are editing would
have to have been emailed to you "for Review" for that option to be
enabled.
Why would the screen resolution slider not move away from
640×480? The resolution slider displays only those resolutions that
your video card's device driver indicates that it can support. In this
case the driver you are using appears to report that it can only support
640×480. This is commonly caused by using the "generic" VGA driver,
instead of a driver specifically for your brand and model of video card.
How do I remove "svchost.exe" from my pc? You
don't, it's a required system file on Windows XP.
See this article on svchost for more
details.
why does the screen resolution change to a larger size each time I sign on to AOL I have to open control panel and re-set them.
Hi, about the Screen resolution topic..
on my computer, after i had to reboot it, the screen wouldn’t adjust away from 800×600… i’ve been told i need to download the correct driver.. but i just can’t figure out how.. i’ve been trying very hard to find the right one.. please help
i have a…
dell dimension 4500S desktop
and a MAG INNOVISION LT464s monitor.
thank you for your time.
my own XP screen resolution changes to 1024 x 768 from 800 x 600 after screen saver… is that the video card as well?
hi! i have the same problem w/AOL causing the computer to switch to a lower resolution everytime i open it up. do you now if there is any updates or patches that i may need to install. do i need to reinstall aol?
Hi,
I can not increase my computers resolution. I cant drag the icon across to a higher setting. Also i can not print of the internet or get onto certain weblinks. I am unable to down load updates for my computer. Please help
I am unable to drag my slider away from 640*480. My computer got the trojan horse virus so I had to delete everything off of it. Before this happended I could change it. Why can’t I now and is their a certain disc I might have that will have this information on it.
The video driver controls what the supported screen resolutions are. Not sure what you did when you say you “delete everything off of it”, but bottom line is that you need to install or upgrade your video driver to the one that matches your video hardware.
I am having the same problem with my screen resolution changing everytime I sign on AOL. Is their a solution to this? Thank you.

I’m pretty good with computers and I’ve tried everything but nothing has worked. Is this a virus or spyware? I’ve run two different anti-virus programs and two different anti-spyware/adware programs and they haven’t come up with anything. I haven’t changed any setting or drivers in like 2 years. Please let me know what the deal is. Thanks.
Having the exact same problem…Is there a cure..HELP.

wow, Sounds like a trend. My pc froze so I rebooted and somehow ended up in bios. I closed and rebooted but then my monitor wouldn’t work. It had defaulted to the onboard video card so I reset it to my add on card (Nvidia Gforce2 mx/mx 400). After that I couldn’t change from 640×480. I have tried my emergancy disk (pc couldn’t read) , rescue disk (same thing) Windows ME disk is missing, and have added every driver update (repeatedly….. adaptor AND monitor), I even tried to do a restore but it wouldn’t work (I had to download a patch). sso I am completely lost and out of ideas.
I feel stupid because it did this when I installed the monitor, plus one other time and short of reinstalling the Win ME, I don’t know what is different. I even tried using my Windows 98 to see if there was a missing Windows based driver. I thought about looking on the Windows XP disk my son has but was afraid it would make things worse. I have eliminated a bunch of programs (to free memory) defragged, system clean, virus check, adware programs. I have consulted both self help suppor and Tech support for the Video card, monitor, PC, and Windows website, as well as doing windows updates. So far the only fix I have found is to set the pc to 16 color, restart and then the slider is back BUT once I change it, the pc reboots and the problem is back. BTW, the pc shows a second display, which DOES have a slider that works.
how do i get the 256 bits back on my computer i was on my computer and then all of a sudden the color frigged up on me then when i went to check out how many bits i was useing there was 16 bits and 24 bits but the 256 bits wasn’t there
Um I re started my whole computer. I have 2 problems.
1) I can’t get my computer to use standby?
2)I cant move my screen resolution from 640 time 480 something?
Help Plzzz!!!!
Having the same problem as all of the above. Was working fine last night but upon starting up this morning my screen res is at 640×480- 4 bit. It is stuck and will not allow me to move it. My usual setting is 1024×768- 32 bit. This is casuing meany headaches as I need my computer to run efficiently. Help would be much appreciated.
I have the same problem as all the above. I have trolled the net and suposedly downloaded the right driver from the Intel website for my video card BUT** my pc will not let me choose it in the device manager. I can’t use my IBM manufacturers disk anymore for some reason and had to purchase win9 SE seperately and re-install from that … and now am stuck with the windows standard driver. any tips please?

I have the same problem on my parents computer – I am their tech guy since I live so close. I tried everything I could think of. I removed a trojan – Trojan.Byte.Verify – Norton picked it up. Safe mode allows 16 bit, and Yesterday I restarted them in safe mode. Then restarted them with “allow vga” Screen resolution won’t change from 640×480- 4 bit, but at least it is not grainy. I hope someone has a solution. I am ready to buy new video card.
Leo – do you have an answer for us? Please help us out, dude.
When I using a software that named “RoboDemo”, I changed screen resolution to 640×480 in the Edit Menu. And I want back to 1024×768 but there is a message in the black screen.

And i can’t use my computer. Please help me. What i to do.
I am having the same problem as averyone else with 4 bit colors and low resolution (mine is 800×600)that can’t be changed. One think i did is run a system restore, BUT it didnt help and all dhe restore points dissapeared. This problem seemed to appear out of nowhere.
Please help me, or at least give me some direction where i might find the solution…
i have the same problem try update all your virus software and adware.
I had the same problem, my screen resolution was at 400 X 300 and 4-bit colour depth this morning. Looked on Symatnec.com for a virus but also downloaded new drivers from nvidia (i have an FX 5200), I Ran the installation and rebooted and now all is good, must have been corrupt drivers! So I’d advise re-installing the drivers for whatever card you own!

im on windows xp and i had a virus aages ago but used spyware doctor to get rid of it but it left me with icons with a grey background like on 98 and a really bad quality pixalated background picture. How do you change these back to the origional nice smooth xp settings? it hurts my eyes!! lol.
Sounds like your the color depth in your Display settings has been changed to 256 or 16 colors. I’d look there and adjust it to 16million or higher.
This is the first problem(s) that using google hasnt helped me with. The display settings are locked to minimum (800×600 and 4bit colour) this was preceded by system process hogging all leftover cpu causing my computer to be slow (for some reason this also prevented cd drive from opening?). This is the first time in 24 hours my pc has had a cpu below 100% and that’s because i held shift down at startup. I still dont know how these problems were caused (so i dont know how to stop them from happening now or again) and wether they are linked.
Any help would be appreciated
31 comments about the same problem, and I can’t find the right solution for my problem anywhere. I’ve spent 2 – 3 hours a night for 3 weeks trying to resolve the problem and nothing seems to work. I’ve reinstalled drivers, updated Windows XP, ran antivirus scans, bought System Mechanic and got all categories up to “good.” Still, when you reset the display resolution and hit “apply” or “ok” it goes back to 4-bit! Safe mode looks great, but in regular mode it’s awful! ANY suggestions would be appreciated!!!
I have the same problem as everyone who has posted their comments. My computer has also problems with Internet Explorer: it gets shut whwnever I open it. Are those problems related to each other?
Thanks in advance.
My computer is very old but the slider wont move after I had to use the cd restoration cd everything on the screen is big and its saying its need hardware to support this what do I do
please help me to remove my svchost.exe
my pc is very low!!!!
Greetings all.
I too had this problem on two of my servers (2K3). I resolved the problem by:
1 Run Chkdsk on the C: drive.
2 Uninstall the latest XP service patch (KB923414) (Don’t reset after this)
3 Reinstall the display drivers and reset.
I tried reinstalling the display drivers first and this didn’t work (neither did the ChkDsk), but if you do it in this order it works (at least it did for me).
Oh. It may be a good idea if you didn’t reinstall the KB923414 patch as this causes it all to happen again.
Hope this helps.

Hello, ca you do me a big favor? Please tell me how to remove the svchost, or the virus using it, I’ve tried every way but none works.
When I start my PC, it always starts on a resolution of 640 x 480. I adjust it in control panel but it reverts to the lower resolution on the next start up. Any one got any suggestions. thanks
hey.
did u recently update your graphics card. because i did and my resolution came to 640px by 480px and 4bit color. then i rolled back my graphics card then everything worked out perfectly.
go to device management in control panel then go to display adapters then roll back your update.
hope this works
OK this is real easy. First, if you change your display adapter, you need to install the specific driver for that display card (if your version of Windows doesn’t recognise it) Probably a good idea to download the latest driver from the manufacturers web site.
Second – If your display keeps reseting the resolution/colours, then it’s either using the default XP driver or you may be in “safe mode”. If in “safe mode” then your troubles may lie elsewhere. If not, as before, download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturers web site.
NTT.
By the way, has anybody bothered to look in their Event Viewer – you might get some good clues as to the real nature of your problems…
Hey, also, SVCHOST is not a virus. It is perfectly normal to see several copies of this running in the background. They are Service Processes and are supposed to be there. Some can be removed using device manager but if you do, you may crash or reset the system. Leave them alone.
Just thought I should mention that.
