My Internet Explorer Address Bar Disappeared – How Do I Get it Back?

My Internet Explorer address bar has disappeared! All I have is search bars from Google and Mywebsearch and Iwonsearch. How do I get it back???

You should be able to right-click on one of the remaining toolbars and select address bar again.

If that doesn’t stick, I’d suspect one of those other search bars for being spyware (not Google’s, though – Google’s toolbar is good and I run it myself). I would run a spyware tool immediately.

Microsoft recently released this knowledgebase article: The Internet Explorer Address bar is missing.

  1. my address bar disappeared, and when i right-click on the web search bar it shows the address bar already checked, and I need my address bar because it takes me directly to the site, unlike the search bar which doesn’t. So I am not going to use the search bar until I have my address bar back right now! Because I have very important software to download from another site and I need my address bar NOW!!! got the picture! Thank You, and have nice day

  2. My adress bar dissapeared also and i got it back by going to VIEW, TOOLBARS, place a check by ADRESS BAR then you should see in the top, right corner: Adress. right click it and un check LOCK THE TOOL BARS. Then you should see a thin line across the rest of the standard buttons, place the curser on it and moove it up and down untill you see a two sided erow then drag the thin line untill you see the adress bar. hope this works

  3. I finally got the address bar back, but lost all toolbar buttons, and I’m still trying how to figure out how to shut my system down without using CtrlAltDelete–and to get rid of a dialogue box that has a script error in it. I was told this link would take care of all those things—I’ve been dsealing with one version or another of this for at least a couple of months.
There has to be an answer!

  4. i just lost my address bar as well and for those how still have problems with it, i found a simplier way to get it back. sometimes, depending on wehre you right click it gives you the option of locking the toolbars. if you unlock them you can drag your address bar all the way across the screen or where ever you want it and relock it.

  5. I lost my address bar completely. There is no place to click at all that even gives me the option of unlocking it. There is nothing at the top of my browser page… I don’t even have a file or view option. Please help!

  6. 1.Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerToolbar
    3. Right-click the WebBrowser key, click Delete, and then click Yes.
    4. Open Internet Explorer, click View, and then point to Toolbars. The toolbar default settings are restored.

  7. Thanx! I was confused at first but I figured it out!! TO ANYONE WHO IS CONFUSED: here’s what u do….. 1- RIGHT click on the windows logo (A FLAG)i was left-clicking
2move line underneath down and you’ll see the address bar!

  8. all you have to do is, right click the flag in the right hand corner.then click “lock the toolbars”, so it doesnt have a tick next to it, and make sure the “address bar” has a tick. then if it doesnt show up, drag the part, where it say “address ” under the flag and drag it over with the mouse. It worked for me.

  9. Thanx Fraser… I did exactly what u said to do, and it worked!… The first thing that I tried before I even thought to search the engine for an address disappearance was to restore my computer. I had just added a new program, and thought that this was the problem. After I did that and the problem was still there, I thought about searching the enigine for a solution. I found this page, and quickly did a Spyware check… I have 4 Spyware programs on my computer, and all of them found no Sypware to delete. Thanx again!

  11. most times i’ve seen this …. move the cursor to just underneath the bar above where you would expect the address bar to be, like right on the bottom edge of it until you get an up and down arrow displayed where the cursor sign would normally be. left click and hold it down. drag the cursor downwards and then release the left mouse button. most likely, you had accidentally hidden the address bar, you should have just unhidden it …. don’t feel bad, in 30 years as an IT technical person, i’ve made WAY stupider mistakes than this easy to do thingy. you could fart around with registry entries etc to your hearts content and you wouldn’t fix this, but you won’t do it again lol

  12. Try this…..
Have a web page open….at the top of the screen under the headings: file, edit, view etc, there should be two different colors …one that has all that stuff and then the web page that you are on. Place your mouse in between the two sections. You should see your mouse turn to where there is an arrow at the top and an arrow at the bottom. Hold the mouse down when you see these two arrows and drag downward. Your address bar should appear again 🙂

  13. To change the Toolbar settings: 1. Start Internet Explorer, click View and then point to Toolbars.
    2. If there is not a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to place the check mark. If there is a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to remove the check mark, and then click Address Bar to place the check mark.
    3. If the Address bar is in the upper right corner and not available, right-click Address, and then click Lock the Toolbar to remove the check mark.
    4. Click Address, and then drag the Address bar where you want it.

    it fixed mine.

  14. You right click somewhere near where the menu toolbar should be, then click menu bar. This will bring back FILE, EDIT, VIEW, FAVOURTIES, etc.

  15. if you right click near the adress bar when it appears click on customise command bar and go down the list till it says full screen and add it to the list.that should work.

  17. I read all your comments about how to get the internet exployer address bar back, but they did not help me because when I click on VIEW there is no “Address Bar” listed ! So what do I do now?

  18. Thank you soo much “sky” … i was worried but it took me not time to get back my address bar with the help of your solution thank you …

  19. I also do not have an address bar and do not have an option to click it in toolbar. I downloaded IE 8 when this problem occurred. Now trying to get rid of IE 8 and go back to 6.

  20. Thanks for the tips. It turns out my address bar was just hiding. By right clicking and sliding to the left it reappeared. I was able to drag it to its original place. If there are alot of buttons they tend to overlap each other. When you see the horizontal arrow you can slide them to hide or show them. Thanks everyone.

  21. it’s my big problem now… i tried all your advice but i failed. the address bar in my window was lost, how can i get it back????

  22. hello. my address bar has not disappeared. but d websites that i have visited that used to b in d address bar has disappeared. every time i open Internet Explorer, i have to type in d web address that i want to visit.

  23. The suggestion from Robert re right click on the flag then .. etc. was the clearest- easier to figure it out from his. Worked great for me. thks.
To those who can’t find the ‘address bar’under view, it’s a subfolder of ‘toolbars’- put cursor over toolbars and voila…

  24. I also tried everything like Igcamp then I tried Robert’s advice. What a SUPERSTAR! I’ve got it back and put it where I wanted it! Clever Boy 😀

  25. I have tried all of the items on here and I still cannot get my IE address bar back. I need the tools button…..PLEASE HELP

  26. Thank you so much! The link you provided to Microsoft helped me fix my problem with the disappearing address bar in two mouseclicks.

  27. my address box hasnt dissapeared, but when im on the internet it like slides up so i have to move my mouse to the top of the screen and then it sort of slides down, so do you know how i can make it so it just always there?

  28. my address bar has dissapeared too, & u tried wat answer-er said but i failed too….
how can i get it back?? i need to use google to searvch for it!! 🙁

  29. Click “View” in the menu bar at the top of Internet Explorer. You will only need to do it once. A list will drop down. On that list you will select the menu “Toolbars” and on that file you will select “Address Bar” and it would be back. This will work on IE1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. If you have IE7 or 8 you cannot remove the toolbar.

  30. I caught my keyboard with my hand accidentally the other day and lost the address bar. Have been trying to get it back for days – so thanks for the F11 tip – it’s back!

  31. I did exactly what they say above, IE 8, “View” then “toolbars”. There is no “Address Bar” to select, There is Menu,Favorites,Command,Status etc. but no address bar option. I find IE8 to be horrible and wish I did’nt upgrade from ie7. Java stopped working correctly, I can’t remove the Favorites bar which eats up 1/2 inch of my screen, I have a search window in the upper right corner that I can’t remove. When adding to the favorites a massive exploded view of all subfavorites opens up and gives me a headache trying to find the right spot to save your bookmark. It really stinks.

  32. I have lost my address bar and Tools menu (FILE,
VIEW, EDIT, TOOLS,) Please tell me how to get it back. I am using WINDOWS XP

  33. Thank you for the F11 tip. I was hitting a whole bunch of keys the other day and all of the sudden my toolbars were gone. Super annoying.

  34. hi, i also not able to get back my address bar on internet explorer instead of following the given suggestion on this site. Is there any quick method to get back the address bar. and the question is that why did it go off/disappear????

  35. I hit f11, then clicked on “view” at the top of the screen. From there, I went to toolbars, and checked “menu bar”, “navigation toolbar”, and “bookmarks toolbar”. I hope that helps.

  36. I want my normal address bar back.. with a go icon and where my addresses stay on a list… please tell me how

  37. OMG that was just too simple… right click on existing toolbars and bam that was all I needed. TYTYTYTYTY. Wish all the fixes were that easy!!!

  38. For some reason my address will not show, I desperatly need this for a funeral on Saturday can you please help. I have never had a prob before. Thank you in advance. Is there a cost for this?

  39. hw du i get it back??i use mozilla firefox….i tried f11 bt din work,hw du i get my address bar back???plz help me..n my lappy workz on “windows vista”

  40. @indu Try this on Firefox:
Tap and hold the Alt key until Tools menu shows at top left of screen. Then select > View > Toolbars > and check > Navigation Toolbar. You’ll see your navigation bar again.

If you mean where to download it from: go to and search there for internet explorer. They’ll have a download page.

  42. Leo,
Good job on getting my address bar back, it happened once before but I forgot how I got it back, possible a full scan. I ran a full scan this time but it did not bring back the address bar. I did what you said about tools, etc. and it worked! Thank you

  43. Please call me at {phone removed} I don’t understand computer termonology,so can you please call me monday morning 11a.m
I can’t get my screen to appear with everything like it always was.My adrress bar.edit …

    • Unfortunately I don’t have the time to make phone calls. All I can suggest is finding someone local who can help you out.

And NEVER post your personal information in a public forum like this.

  45. One other thing to consider is if you’ve accidentally clicked on “FULL SCREEN”. You just need to uncheck that and your address bar will stop “hiding”. GO to “TOOLS, FULL SCREEN”. This is also done by Function F11, as someone above mentioned. I just wanted to point out what you were actually doing with F11, so if it happens again, you’ll remember what you need to do. Good Luck!

  46. I have recently upgraded to windows 11, using IE 11. when I go to a browser page,, all that shows is the address bar, I always have to maximise the page every time I want to change browser pages.. do you know why? thank you john ayton

  47. I thought I knew what I was doing, but I am quite lost right now… My address bar has disappeared. If I go to “View” to check the “Address” bar, there is no “Address” to check. I have all of the other bars available to be checked EXCEPT “Address”. I also cannot click on the flag in the upper right corner as there is none there to click on.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
