What is msiexec.exe?
[/al_question]Msiexec.exe is the Windows Installer Service. It’s normally started when you install a new program, and can often be left running afterwards. It may start automatically on reboot in some cases where the installation process has indicated that a reboot was required, or the installation failed to complete successfully.
Can anyone help with my ‘msiexec’ problem. Basically, I cannot uninstall or install Microsoft software (eg: Office). I get the ‘MSIEEXEC has performed an illegal operation’ message, details of which are as follows:
MSIEXEC caused an invalid page fault in
module CTLLC.DLL at 0167:61c05319.

(I can’t understand any of this, but really want to sort this out as my Office installation needs re-installing!)
I’ve downloaded the Installer 2.0 package from Microsoft, but when I try to run ‘instmsi’, I get the same ‘Illegal Operation’ message. Any help will be very gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Ian
PS: I am running Win98SE, ver.4.10.2222A
I’d start by running the system file checker. Sounds like something’s corrupt. (http://ask-leo.com/archives/000074.html ). And spyware and virus scan as well, naturally.
When I attempt to install Mcafee Internet Security software, I get a prompt to stop the MsiExec.exe script from running. What should I do?
I’d need to see the exact text of the message.
i’m having the same problem – when trying to install a newly purchased copy of mcafee internet security software, my symantec norton antivirus software stops the process, and prompts me to stop MsiExec.exe from running:
——
alert: malicious script detected
object: filesystem object
activity: getfile
your computer is halted and needs to do something about this script
file: msiexec.exe
what do you want to do?
action:
stop this script
allow this activity once
allow the entire script once
quarantine this script
authorize this script
——-
i’m figuring it’s just norton being pissy, but want to make sure before i allow the script to run.
A agree. I’d like it run.
i did let it run, but the mcafee install still wouldn’t work. in fact the whole thing turned into quite a mess – i had to uninstall, not just disable, norton for the mcafee install to to run and even then it ended up hanging at the end and freezing my system up – and upon reboot only the antivirus part of the app had installed, not the firewall, etc.
i ended up deleting absolutely everything related to both mcafee and norton including any and all traces of both apps from my registry, rebooted and started fresh with the mcafee install, which ran and installed without a hitch.
if it were for any other sort of app besides antivirus/firewall i would have tossed the whole thing aside, vowing to never use either company’s products again.
I installed some software called DVDEO Professional. I thought I had then completely uninstalled it but I must have missed something.
Whenever I reboot the PC Windows Installer (msiexec.exe) automatically tries to reload it. It fails of course because it’s not there.
It also tries to do this on the back of other software when it’s loading. If I don’t cancel msiexec.exe quickly it also cancels the legit software.
How can I stop msiexec.exe doing this?
Tracy: you just encountered an argument for a router instead of a software firewall :-). I don’t run either of those products, but have a LinkSys router acting as my firewall.
Rob: I’d check to see what’s automatically runnign at start up, and the disable the offending instance of msiexec. This article talks about windows startup programs:

There’s no way to know without knowing what you may have done to cause it to try to run in the first place. And I don’t have any experience or data on SPAMfighter, sorry.
I need to install a copy of msiexec and I can’t find it anywhere can somebody help………
What version of Windows? If Windows XP, it’s already part of the operating system.
I also need to get my virtual hands on a copy of msiexec.exe, I have windows 98 SE

if i get the send error report saying that there was something wrong with msiexec.exe during an installation of software, does that mean that the msi for that software didn’t get installed?
It depends on when in the process the error happened. So the answer, unfortunately, is “maybe”.
msiexec.exe where can i find it?i want to install a web camera and when i finish come a message with msiexec.exe and instalation failed

I’m installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 on a win2000pro system and I have gotten multiple “msiexec.exe” failures. It also happened when I was doing an update from Norton. Similar post on Oct 4th 2004. Norton says there are no virus found .. can I trust it?
McAfee said that MsiExec.exe was recognized as malicious script and shut down my installation. Should I tell it to ignore and continue installation?
I keep getting a Visual C++ Runtime library box popping up saying runtime error. And that it has something wrong with this file MSiExec.exe. It then says abnormal program temination after that…Anyone help?
Hello, I am trying to uninstall Lemontonic messenger and I keep getting an error from Nortons saying that msiexec.exe has errors…. what do I do ???
I am running XP Pro and I noticed in my MSCONFIG i have “msieexec”. Can anyone tell me what this relates too? And yes is does read: msieexec not msiexec
Haven’t heard of that one. Given how the name is so close to msiexec.exe, a valid windows program, it really makes me suspicious that it’s a virus or spyware. I’d make sure to run up-to-date scans for both.
I went ahead and renamed the file and so far it has not effected any of my programs and you could be correct about the virus. My virus scan did not pick it up – My Spyware did.
When trying to uninstall the Lemontonic Messenger all you need to do is let the script run. “malicious script” It’s just bad code in the messenger which makes Anti-Virus programs think it has a virus but it doesn’t. I just let the script run and it uninstalled no problem.
msiexec.exe belongs to the Windows Installer Component and is used to install new programs that use Windows Installer package files (MSI). This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

I have read all of the questions and comments regarding msiexec and found no answer for my problem which is similar to two already posted :
1 “I’m installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 on a win2000pro system and I have gotten multiple “msiexec.exe” failures”
2 “While i’m installing norton antivirus on windows 2000pro the program stoped by this message:”msiexe
.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows.
An error log is being created.
can you help me?

My problem relates to “Norton Internet Security 2005” which gives multiple errors as above but the program continues to load. It is only when completed and re-booted that it says “an error has occured – please uninstall and re-install the program. After a couple of tries at this I am now desperate.
Hello, I cannot find the answer anywhere on the net to this: I uninstalled a faulty version of adobe recently. And now everytime I hover over a link on my desktop/file-system for the first time in a fresh reboot, the “Windows Installer” flashes up and the msiexec.exe shows up in the MSCONFIG.
I tried reinstalling MSIEXEC 3.0 for XP SP2 from Microsoft, but apparently this is not possible. Also, an error occurs saying I already have a better version installed.
Anyone know how to stop this annoying occurance short of reinstalling XP? I opened a CMD prompt to start logging to read what was happening, but now I cannot figure out how to turn the logging off–they’re cluttering up my TEMP files. Ay ay ay!

Hi,
I have problems with this file too. What happens is that everytime I use acrobat reader (6.0 CE), at least when clicking on a file from the browser, msiexec.exe starts to trying install windows messenger 5.1 (which I already have), like it was the end of the world! Processes start, something about tablet pc also tries to start, along with messenger. What I do is start killing all processes (they keep coming back…) until it gives up. Then acrobat loads and everything’s ok. I can’t tell you how annoying this is. Sometimes I just decide not to look at PDF fils to avoid the trouble.
I’m using XP, corporate edition, all updates except SP2. My girlfriend uses the same software setup at home and has the same problem.
whats up with this???
i started installing limewire pro 4.8.1 and msiexec.exe started up my sygate firewall looked at it and it was sending and reciving info i suspect it to be a spyware sending info i treminated the activity and the install continued after i killed the “msiexec.exe”
something is funny with this B. S. explain please
p.s. i have winme on my system.
Limewire has a reputation for including lots of spyware.
My question was asked last fall, but no answer is posted. When attempting to uninstall a version of Trend antivirus on an Me system, I get the message “MSIEXEC.EXE is linked to missing export MSI.DLL:222” and the process fails.
Is this missing export an application specific file (i.e. from Trend) or is it created on installation? Where do I get a copy?
Sorry for the delay … I can’t respond to every comment.
msi.dll is part of the Windows Installer. On Windows ME, I’d be tempted to download and install a new Windows Installer (this link: http://ask-leo.com/d-wininstall98 will get you to the MS download site) in the hopes that it will repair the issue.
Thanks, Leo.
I found an article with step by step instructions for the repair of this “linked to missing export msi.dll:222” error. It’s at
http://www.pacificdigital.com/kb/article.aspx?id=12251
It is caused by a corrupted Windows Installer and is
fixed with a new install. The install is a little complex, though.
Hello,
I have a problem, there’s almost nothing I can install. Every time when I try to install anything it says ‘msiexec has performed an illegal operation’, you know, that error message with the white cross in the red circle.

J Fox: you need to repair your Windows Installer. Either run the Windows System File Checker on WIndows XP: http://ask-leo.com/what_is_the_system_file_checker_and_how_do_i_run_it.html, or download a new copy of the Windows Installer from the Microsoft website. See also the prior comment that pointed to kb article discussing the MSI.DLL problem.
Goober: same thoughts for you actually: repair the Windows Installer.
How can i do with my computer. It’s always
msoexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I don’t know how can i take out this questions.
Please, help me.
Thanks.
msoexec? With an “o”? No idea what that is, and since it’s so similarly named to msiexec, I’d be temtped to think it’s spyware or a virus. I’d scan for both.
Gr8 job done , this article actually worked out for me
Blocking it with symantec Anti-Virus seem’s to work wonder’s it hasn’t given me any preoblems since i told it to block it and i can update and install anything. i don’t know if this will help anyone but it worked for me and i run windows XP
When my pc comes on I get the message Windows can not find C:\windows\msiexec.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again What am I supposed to do?
I’d check to see what’s trying to run when you start up, and see if you can find and clean that up. http://ask-leo.com/whats_all_this_stuff_running_after_i_boot_windows.html
I wanted to install Half-Life 2

Recently I had to do a system recovery and installed Windows XP Pro. (I had Windows XP before). Now I am attempting to install my programs on XP Pro. I am having problems with one installation – Greeting Card Factory Deluxe. I can install it on a lap top and another desk top – both with XP Pro installed. But it won’t install on my computer. I get the message: MSIEXEC.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have to Alt Control Delete after that. My task manager tells me that Greeting Card Factory Deluxe InstallShield is not responding.
What can I do to fix this?
I’d start with the system file checker: http://ask-leo.com/what_is_the_system_file_checker_and_how_do_i_run_it.html
My computer is apparently missing the msiexec.exe. file and I am not sure how to recover it. I reinstalled Windows Installer but that did nothing. Any ideas?

If Windows XP, start with the System File Checker:

Otherwise download and reinstall the Windows Installer from
the microsoft site:
Win98/Me: http://ask-leo.com/d-wininstall98

Hello, I am having the exact same problem as this persons post below. When looking at the processes of task manager msiexec.exe keeps popping in and out. This is creating my CPU usage to jump from 0% to 58% and then back to 0%. I’ve watched this long enough to see that when the msiexec.exe files hit, so does the spike in the CPU usage… there will also sometimes be more than one msiexec.exe file coming… this is very irritating because no matter what I’m doing in any program I am constantly bombarded with pauses every few seconds. Can you tell me if I have a virus or something? I use Norton Anti-virus and Internet Security. I have Spysweeper on all the time…

Hi Leo,
I get an error popup that says Symantec script blocking is blocking msiExec.exe. The popup refers to “-EmbeddingCE4D57B103A7465E15A3DBA80E49C787”.
The numbers inback of “Embedding” change with each instance of the popup.
I’m not using Symantec products at this time but I have done so in the past.

My windows installer consistently freezes on the “Preparing to install…” window when I try to install some programs. Some things can still install, as I don’t think everything uses msiexec.exe to install, but it’s really frustrating when it does block an installation. I really don’t want to reformat. Some things that happened around the time that I started noticing msiexec.exe not working: the failure of my AutoUpdate for my windows updates. I’ve gone through all of the troubleshooting procedures for the error I got and nothing worked. Also, a lot of the windows wizards that try to recognize hardware freeze when trying to locate new devices. Any help?
Hello Leo, I have the same problem as these guys or I believe I do msiexec is sucking cpu resources arbitrarily!
I would go into more detail but it looks like you don’t know… four months and no answers! This isn’t the way to do it is it?
Buy you a coffee indeed!
is it bad when you see it on the task manager?
No, not neccessarily.

Hey Leo,
I am trying to install an awesome game called Day of Defeat on my computer. Everytime I open it, the main menu comes up, with one of the options of course being to install the game. when I click on install my computer does that “preparing to install” box thing, and then opens the first of the series of dialogue boxes asking about installation preferences. This is when the whole thing freezes, and the installation of DoD stops responding so I shut it down. Then one of those error reporting message comes up telling me that this occurred because of msiexec.exe, do I want to send a report to microsoft.

I’m trying to install iTunes 7 (13 Sep 2006 release). The installation goes until the registration in the registry when the system hangs indefinitely. Looking at the services, msiexe.exe is at 99% and there it stays.
Both the install and the system do not respond to any type of shutdown (after patiently waiting 15 minutes) except the worst kind…. hard power down…
Is something unique going on with the new iTunes 7 release or is there something msiexec.exe doesn’t like about a product from Apple?
I am having the same problem as Mike is, installing iTunes 7. misexec.exe continues to run and take up almost all my processor, even after a reboot! What is going on?
Chester
I also have the problem on iTunes 7 and this what i did… Simply “kill” that msiecex.exe process and you’re done! the installation completes in 5 seconds after that… The only issue is that the damn coverflow it doesn’t work, why? i’m still working on it, if someone finds the solution, please post it or email me!
I previously successfully installed Office 2003 on my PC. I had a spyware/virus problem and so I had to reformat my PC. I was unable to re-install my Office 2003. I tried the Office 2002, it installed ok. I tried to upgrade to office 2003, but still no luck. I keep getting this error message
“msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience”
What do I need to do to be able to install my office 2003?

Hi Leo,
I just did a second window update a few days ago and after that whenever I tried to disable the Local Area Connection, it won’t let me disable it and it keeps poping up this message
“It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection maybe using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account.”
It’s driving me nuts because I cannot find the cause of it and repair it. Do you know what happened? why couldn’t I disable the Local Area Connection anymore? Please help! …-_-…
Thanks so much,
Connie

Great resource, Leo —- I have the same question I see asked before. I just bought a new laptop, and when I went to install Quicken on it, msiexec.exe tries to contact the Internet (intercepred bt Norton Internet Security). Why is it doing that? No other errors noticed.
I keep getting an error when trying to install updates.
The error is as follows:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exc
The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application’s support team for more information.

i’m having the same problem with a new laptop on xp; maybe my problem is the following: i’ve made a full (default; no choice actually) roxio installation, than tried to remove drag on disc witch f*ing launches on start, but it cannot be uninstalled, so i deleted its folder and also other ones in the Program_Files/Roxio/ Directory because i did’nt want to see them anymore; now it seems that this msiexec wants to complete the installation using violence.
sorry 4 bad english
Similar to bill white, tim, and tsend, i am having similar problems because of the MSIEXEC.EXE errors. It started with a force uninstall of Norton AV 2006, then i installed Norton Internet Securoty 2007. I immediately started getting errors when trying to open quickbooks, outlook etc. its a mess.

I keep getting an error when trying to install updates.
The error is as follows:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exc
My C file is full of small msiexec.exe files.I’m afraid that eventually they’ll consume a lot of my memory not to mention that I can’t organize my files. Shall I delete them or I may have problem in the future? Is it wise to disable the msiexec.exe function and if yes how can I do that?
Thank you!
Every time i log on the msiexec.exe file places a folder on the c: with a text document in it loging the processes run by the computer. How do i stop these folders being created?
Really easy, first of all get Windows Installer 3.1 on Microsoft.com (We will need it)
Restart in safe mode your PC go to c:\windows\system32 and rename msi.dll,msiexec.exe and msihnd.dll you can chance the ext .dll to .old
Then restart windows to normal mode and reinstal windows installer, that will fix the problem

I have been trying to install a new program (QuickBooks Pro) and keep getting an error message:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

I have never been able to install the program but now the error message pops up frequently even when I am not trying to install the program. Any suggestions on how I can maybe bypass the runtime error and install the program or at least stop the pop up error message? My primary desire is to be able to load the program. Thanx.

You can turn off DEP for a specific application if you like.
Right click on My Computer, click on Properties, click on the Advanced tab,
click on Settings in the Performance section, click on Data Execution
Prevention, and therein you can add specific applications to be exempted.
Good luck!

I am running this msi from a batch file and as you can see, the commands are run together making maintenance and debug more difficult. Is there a way of separating the commands into a 1-line-per-command format?
msiexec INSTALLDIR=”C:\Program Files\Enterprise Server\” INSTALLLEVEL=1 DV=1 ID_DEFAULT_SERVER=vpcrs-xpdvsrv ID_RADIOGROUP=1 ID_GROUPADDRESS=234.20.0.1 /quiet /passive /i “C:\Documents and Settings\test1\Desktop\DeskView.msi” /log “C:\Documents and Settings\test1\Desktop\install.log”

^ is the line continuation character in batch files, so you should be able to:
msiexec ^
INSTALLDIR=”C:\Program Files\Enterprise Server\” ^
INSTALLLEVEL=1 ^
DV=1 ^
ID_DEFAULT_SERVER=vpcrs-xpdvsrv ^
ID_RADIOGROUP=1 ^
ID_GROUPADDRESS=234.20.0.1 ^
/quiet /passive ^
/i “C:\Documents and Settings\test1\Desktop\DeskView.msi” ^
/log “C:\Documents and Settings\test1\Desktop\install.log”
Good luck!

I was having a problem reinstalling Office 2003. The suggestions that Wingla posted fixed my problems and I was able to remove and reinstall Office with no more errors. I previously had the same errors as the ones posted above. Thanks!
try unplugging the printer or scanner from the computer and then do the clean boot and then see that the problem gets resolved.
Has anyone ever seen this problem when boot to desktop….
Microsoft .net frame work : An unhandled exception has occured in a component in your application.
and if you check the startup in the windows configuration utility:
you will get the two softwares for this issue. these are:
1. hpdigital imaging
2. hp image zone faf
If you try to remove the HP software from the Add/remove programs , then after restarting the computer again you will gace the same issue.
Try deleting it from start–>all programs–>startup.
After everything is done, run the spyware scan…….because the next error message that you will get is the application you are trying to access in on the photosmart cd, so get it. It can be a spyware.
In the last turn off the automatic updates.
All these steps resolevd this isse…!!
For the Greeting Card Factory Deluxe issue, delete the Nova… directory under C:\Program Files. The installer is poorly written and crashes if the default directory already exists.

When XP Pro was just finishing installing updates, the msiexec.exe made outgoing internet connection and my firewall caught this activity! Is it virulent activity?
I have an IBM laptop with XP. The msiexec.exe program is running in the background causing the CPU usage to jump consistently from 3 or 4% to 90 – 95%, causing interruptions in other programs. In the “processes” section of the Windows Task Manager, the “image name” of msiexec.exe will have 1 – 3 individual processes (1 has user name SYSTEM, the others have my user name “markn”). The SYSTEM process remains all the time (CPU moves 00 – 95%), the “markn” process will have 1 or 2 that remove themselves, then reappear seconds later. This repeats continuously. All other processes remain at a constant CPU. Can this be repaired? I’ve run virus checks, C-Cleaner, AdAware, and even defragemented. I appreciate any help.

to use almost continuous 100% CPU . Probably a HP update… I moved the file to a new folder..
Problem fixed….1/16/2008
Don’t try fixing msiexec.exe. Investigate the processes that are running along with it..

I have an appliction which I want to install through MSIEXEC.exe. And I want to install it in quiet mode – without user interation.
Problem:
During the installation this application pops up some registering dll dialogbox(some error). And the dialog box has three buttons, cancel – retry – ignore. I want to ignore it. I can do it manually/Full UI mode, but I have to ignore it manually.
I tried following command to do it quietly but the installation rolled back because bydefault it doesn’t choose IGNORE button. Can I have a solution for this?
Command I tried:
msiexec.exe /I application.exe /qb

Hello
I uninstalled DocQscribe software for my work and then went to reinstall and received an error code 1603 and failed to reintall and also showed C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe/x{A706C466-E03D-4293-850B-067C785A4A3F}/gn,
Any suggestions on how to repair this so I can install my work program so I may get back to work? I have Windows XP home edition, Thanks!
I had windows re-installed due to a missing file error caused by some new virus. After the re-instillation I noticed when I pressed alt-ctrl-delete that msiexec.exe was there, but that it kept running itself, then dissapearing, repeatedly. This causes the hourglass next to my mouse cursor to appear and dissapear constantly. It also takes away from the system idle process, which normally would be at 99. Can I delete this file? How can I make it stop running itself then stoping itself?
I uninstalled Microsoft’s IntelliPoint to obtain the lastest version as the readme said should be done. Then I tried to install the update but it always stops the install with this error message:
Setup could not install a required component “Microsofts Error Reporting. Restart your computer and try again.
I checked Services and set Error Reporting to Manual,& started it running. Rebooted but still get the same error message. It usually & normally started, but not since I installed some Microsoft Updates recently
What else can I do to install the software without the message appearing every time?
I subscribe to your newsletter but I’ve never seen this problem addressed. Please help me.
When ever I try to install or delete a programme, a messagebox appears, :”the windows intaller service could not be accessed, this can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not properly installed”, how do i solve this problem?
I am installing a new printer, but I get an error message, and then when all is installed I get more error messages and dont print at all.

Unfortunately, depending on what is going on, you may have to do a repair install of windows. I was fortunate that i did not have to.
