How do I delete accounts from the .NET passport login dropdown?

How do I delete accounts from the .NET passport login dropdown?

The .NET login is used for MSN Messenger. If several people
use a machine and sign into MSN Messenger then their email addresses
may be added to the dropdown list presented when you come back and login later.
How to delete email addresses from that list for privacy reasons is not obvious.

Fortunately it’s fairly easy.

Become a Patron of Ask Leo! and go ad-free!

In Control Panel, select User Accounts, click on Change an Account,
click on your login account, and then on the left click on Manage my network passwords.
You should now be presented with a list of accounts, some of which are the accounts
listed in the .NET login. And a Remove button.

Update!

I’ve teamed up with Lockergnome and TechSmith to product weekly video tips. Now available is
tip #12: Managing .NET Passports in Windows XP which
will walk you through the process of removing items from the .NET Passport
password dropdown, and more.

  5. Ok, this removes the .net passports, but how do I make may computer remember my passport? Suddenly one day I couldn’t automatically connect to the msn messenger because the dropdown list in login dialog is empty. I checked the registry setting (disabledomaincreds) you suggested to set to true and that is set to false on my computer. Still no passport is remembered.

  7. My guess is that can’t be done (to prevent real kids from doing that). You may have to call MSN support. Otherwise I’d just create a new passport.

  13. To remove sign-in names from the MSN dropdown list do as follows:

Go to extra in explorer, chose the option to show hidden files.

Then go to c: – documents and settings – your name – application data – microsoft – credentials. Remove the mapinside credentials.

Restart Windows, go to MSN and you’ll find your sigin-in names gone.

  21. After I installed the file “disablenetcreds.reg” in my registry to delete all the accounts from .NET passport login dropdown, how can I remove it from the registry again? where is it located in the registry?

    Reply
  22. To be clear, that’s not a file I provided or support, however… “.reg” files are text files, so you can open it in notepad to see what registry key(s) were affected.

    Reply
  23. you cannot uninstall that file.. all that does is change a little bit of writing in the regestry

    i think this is it:
    ——————————–
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    “disabledomaincreds”=dword:00000001
    ——————————–
it either adds that dword.. or it changes an original. it shouldnt be anything to worry about

i think the original is this:
    ——————————–
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    “disabledomaincreds”=dword:00000000
    ——————————–
so it changes that value to 1 .. disabling ‘domain credits’

  54. Microsoft says this… but the version (4.7) of MSN Messenger that I have did not have the option:

How can I remove names from the sign in window?

When you sign in to MSN Messenger, you may see several Passport name choices available in the sign-in window. You can remove names that aren’t needed or add new names.

In the main MSN Messenger window, click the Tools menu and click Options.
In the left pane, click General.
Under Sign-in Accounts and Passwords, click Change.

To add names to your list:
    Click Add
Type your network location, user name, and password.
    Click OK.

To remove names from your list:
Click the name you want to delete
    Click Remove
    Click OK.
    Click Close.
    Click OK.

If you want the other addresses deleted from the drop down list, delete all the msn messenger files, applications, whatever from your computer. Make sure you include the ones below…then just re-download msn messenger and go through the start-up again.

To remove all Messenger for Mac files from your computer, delete the following folders in the /Documents/Microsoft User Data folder:
    Microsoft Messenger Data
    Messenger Corporate Data
    Microsoft Messenger History

  99. I am on Vista and it will not let me delete from the dialog box. It let’s me click to a MS Live web site to change it but the unwanted dropdown email address (Live ID) does not appear there. I even used their help to search for what they call account links. Any ideas?

  101. well i believe i have found a solution for xp users atleast…

    1- start
    2- run
    3- type regedit
    4- Ctrl + F
    5- (desired username to delete)
6- delete that username* >should be gone now.

in regedit the file is in
    HKEY_USERS/S-1-5-21-343818398-1606980848-725345543-1003/microsoft/identityCRL

    hope that helps.

  104. Just do a find under Microsoft, click through the results till you find the microsoft preferences, view by date modified, delete the ones that date from the last time you opened msn (it may pay to open msn and quit just before doing this so the preference set is most recent). Empty trash and the next time you open msn it will prompt you for reloading your account details, all the other email login addresses will be gone.

  107. “In Control Panel, select User Accounts, click on Change an Account, click on your login account, and then on the left click on Manage my network passwords. You should now be presented with a list of accounts, some of which are the accounts listed in the .NET login. And a Remove button” …I suppose this only deletes the latest login ID and the ID logged in after that will still appear automatically again in the drop down. Can we set it so as not to remember any login ID at all??
