How can I uninstall Directx 9?

How can I uninstall Directx 9?

To the best of my knowledge you can’t. Once installed, it becomes part of the operating system. If you need to uninstall then a Google search for “DirectX Uninstall” returns several hits, but I can’t speak for their quality. Ultimately, the approach I would try would be be to re-install the operating system and then not install DirectX 9.

  1. What a suggestion. just reinstall the operating system. do you honestly expect someone to completely re install just to remove directx 9. do a search on google for directx uninstaller

  2. Yes, I do. While researching this answer I did, in fact, do exactly as you describe … search google for tools to assist. Those that exist, as of this writing, appear to be notoriously incomplete and/or buggy – often causing more problems than they resolve. I can’t recommend them.

  3. This will fix the problem. XP ships with DirectX 8.1 as ppart of the OS. DirectX 9 has a habit of not installing correctly if you have Anti-Virus Runnig, or if you are doing the install with the online installer on a dial up connection.

To remove DirectX Do the following:
    Start > Run > regedit
Browse to and remove the following key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX

Don’t delete any of the other folders or your PC wont work.

Restart your computer and if you did above, DirectX 9 will be gone, and XP will have reinstalled 8.1 in the background on restart.

    Confirm by doing the following:

    Start > Run > dxdiag

This will open your directx diagnostic tool, containing a wealth of info. On the first tab, down the bottom it will tell your your directx version. Should now say DirectX 8.1

  5. Then XP is corrupt, something else that was installed corrupted your graphics system or disagreed with directx 9. At this point I would recommend you have a look at what you installed over the last 6 months. Consider using system restore to do this, and note what games etc you installed. Run a system restore back about 6 months and see if you are having the same problems.
If you’re not, start reinstalling from here, Install directx first from the Microsoft site though. Now continue installing your programs and see which one causes the problem.
Note, if you’re worried about restroing back six months, then create a restore point first, this will mean you can restore back to this point if you like later on.

  6. Guys, I HAVE TO get rid of this stupid Direct X 9.0. My question is, though, the following. Isn’t XP nowadays shipped with the version 9.0???? I believe that’s the case. I’m so pissed.

I’m now having the same problem. just installed dx9.0c and it gets stuck with my favourite game.
the bigger problem is that the dx-uninstaller on the web don’t work, and dxbuster is not up 2 date.

    help please.

  8. i was trying to install and play an old game that i had found the other day, and of course, i get crashed out of the game everytime i run it. so i ran dxdiag.exe and found this:

Several files (ddraw16.dll, ddraw.vxd, ddhelp.exe, etc.) are missing! You should reinstall DirectX to put them on your system.
Several files (d3dim.dll, d3drm.dll, d3dxof.dll, etc.) are old versions, which could cause problems. You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version.

so then i proceeded to attempt to update my directx and i installed 9.0c, and afterwards the same message still occur, does anyone know why?

    im running winxp sp1

I can’t re-install DX 9.0c. AntiVirus and Firewall Disabled , Installation Completes, Components are ready, Version 9.0c doesn’t show up anywhere.
    Start / Run / Dxdiag / Version 8.1
Question: Have any ideas why DX 9.0c won’t re-install after Eradicator?
I will trying Eradicator in Safe Mode, Restart/F8

is seems to install properly. I don`t receive any kind of failure/problem message. However it doesn`t seem to be installed. When I reboot and go to windpows update, the file is still listed as need to be installed.
When I clik start, run, Dxdiag – I see that the version I have on my computer is direct x 8.2815
Any idea what the problem might be ?

I just got the Sims 2, and I went to download the required DirectX9c (I’ve got 9b) and during the instalation it kept giving me the error message “DirectX did not copy a required file”. Over and over again. I couldnt find a way to uninstall DirectX9, so I went through and removed all pieces of DirectX 9.b from my system and tried to re-install it, and that didn’t work, it wouldn’t let me re-install it, it said it was already there. What should I do, I am getting sooo annoyed?

1st – uninstall ur current directx 9.0x by unsing Directx Eradicator.

2nd – close all antivirus programes.

3rd – make sure that u have directx 9.0 and directx 9.0c setup files.
replace 2 files : “dsetup32.dll” & “DSETUP.dll” of directx 9.0c setup files by two samename files of directx 9.0 (overwrite them)

    4th – Run setup directx 9.0c

now , i can play “The SIms 2” by that way .

  26. The problem with SIMS 2 is with your video card hardware. It must compatable with directx 9.0c or the directx wont install all the appropriate drivers. even when using directx supplied with sims 2. I have found several video cards that claim to be compliant but are not. Check with your vidoe card manufacturer to get the latest drivers.

    good luck!

    PS.
I installed Sims 2 on win xp pro and had no problems! even with old nvidia mx440 video card.

  32. HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF A GeForce MX4000? Well, I bought one today to play the Sims 2, and when I check it on my computer (under ‘dxdiag’) it says the card I have is a RIVA 128…something or another. It is ticking me off. THEN I went to the support site for the card (its NVIDIA but the site on the box was http://www.xfxforce.com) and when I looked up my purchase code it says that its a GeForce4…?? the purchase code is PV-T98L-QYH7 (on the website the last 4 digits say NA). Anyway, the point is that now I am SO CONFUSED b/c I dont even know what kind of card I have or if it works w/ the Sims and it still gives me that popup when I try to start the game that says it cannot find a compatible card for directX9.0, I have that, and also on dxdiag it says that i need to upgrade my card (which I have done over and over again) because it will not run direct3D. I am really confused now! If anyone knows anything (about what to do or the videocard) please let me know. I really appreciate it.

I’ve tried going on the internet and downloading DirectX 9.0c, but it doesn’t do anything, I just get the error message again! If any one has any suggestions…let me know!

  34. While I can’t vouch for any results, I’ve had good success with “DirectX Buster”, from the following: (http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.html). Having had trouble with DirectX 9.0, I used it to uninstall 9.0 and reinstall 8.1, and the process was successful. I don’t understand why Microsoft can’t supply an uninstaller for DirectX, particularly when they screw it up as often as they do.

  35. Ive had this Problem for awhile now, in being unable to properly install dx9c, however I have had great success in uninstalling it back to the original 8.1 version using DirectX happy Uninstall which can be found at http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#MDX (a DirectX unofficial support site. I believe the reason that 9c doesnt install properly on some machines is an actual video hardware conflict(card doesnt support DX9+) Hope this is of some use. Cheers

  36. There are several tools to uninstall DirectX 9.0, such as DirectX Uninstall, Happy Uninstaller (uninstalls up to DX 9.0b only) and DirecX Erradicator. Just search the Google! This part is easy.

The real problem arrives when you want to re-install DirectX 9.0c again! Windows XP doesn’t let you do it; it reports the necessary components are already in use, and they are! But, when you go to DXDIAG it reports Not Found, DirectX 8.0, 9.0 or 9.0b. So, why DXDIAG reports a different DX version? That’s the Registry fault. So, all you have to do is to open Regedit (Start>Run>regedit) and look for HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/DirectX and replace the “version” key value to 04.09.0000.0904. That’s it. Now, go to DXDIAG and check what’s the reported DX version and click the Files tab to check if there are any problems. Good luck.

  42. Chiggz, I sure hope you still check this board! I’m going to e-mail you too, just to make sure you get this. Here is my question… I have tried to upgrade DX for awhile now from 9.0b to 9.0c, and it has never worked. I download it off the site, run the installation program, and it acts like it’s going to work, but when I push “Next” to install, it just goes straight to the completion screen of the installation and says “The installed components are now ready for use.”, but it wasn’t installing anything at all. I’ve searched the web a lot for an answer to this problem, but have not found one. I thought maybe I actually do have 9.0c and that the Registry is messed up, like you said on your comment, so I tried putting in 04.09.0000.0904 in the version part of the Registry, but it seems like that version # is to 9.0b, so do you think it would work if I put in 9.0c’s version #? If so, do you have that key value? Thanks for your time.

  68. Dear Sir,
Rightnow, My PCs have DirectX 9.0b
    I can’t install DirectX 9.0c.
    How can i uninstall DirectX 9.0b ?
    Please help me

    Thank you very much.

  69. well people about installing directX 9.0c I’ve found the solution:
You need both the 9.0b and 9.0c full versions. both around 30Mb each. Unzip both to respective temp folders. then copy and paste the following from 9.0b to 9.0c:

    dxsetup
    dsetup32.dll
    DSETUP.dll

next you need a direct x uninstaller. i used dx eradicator from majorgeeks.com, bu there are plenty around

once done simply run dxsetup in the 9.0c version (which would be the one you copied before right) and it will install using the files from the folder it is in. and there you go you have installed directx 9.0c.
Check the dxdiag, and you’ll se that now your version of directX is 9.0c! The only problem is that I still cannot run Age of Empires 3, cause there’s a window saing:
    Direct3D initialization failed. Possible causes:
    Old or corrupted graphics driver.
    Direct3D improperly installed.
    Hardware acceleration disabled

    So can anyone help
    Thanx…

  70. if u cant play sims 2 because u cant install directx 9.0c (the instaler finishes very quickly but u still have the formal version), this is how u fix it:
the problem is service pack 2 (SP2). so if u format your PC, install windows with sp1, install dx9.0(it should work) then upgrade to SP2.
    it`s 100% sucses
    try it

  72. Firstly, the comment about removing the key using regedit – nice idea, but you’re not deleting it, you’re just removing any data of its existance. Doing this will end up filling your harddisk with junk that you’ll never delete.

Secondly, yes, I’ve got the same issue, but Microsofts history has always been bad when it comes to support / fixing bugs etc. Knowing this, it’s only wise to be able to backup (to CD / DVD / linux server) incase you should ever find yourself in need.

Finally, how many people have said “I’ve got the same problem, please help”, although about 10 different suggestions as to how to remove it have already been given. Read other peoples posts before touching the keyboard and if you’ve got to say something, try adding something to the discussion rather than “it’s not working for me either”.

if its already selected, then double click on it and check a few settings. Device should be set to the name of your sound card, or ‘microsoft sound mapper’. if none of these work, then it might be yor sound card. can you play music through another program. windows media player for instance.

Anyways, this DX 9.0c is the problem I think the installation in and of itself is the problem. whoever uses directx should definetely avoid two things. 1. auto updates. and 2. Updating directx pas version 8.1 al the 9s suck ass and are not worth updating to.

    1. Forget about it.
    2. Find a new hobby.
    3. Microsoft sucks so dont try to fix their stuff.
    4. The only problem is your brain, if you try to forget about it and find a new interest in life that does not involve this stupid DirectX, you will be OK…..

  92. Hi all, I finally got this thing to work and it’s not as easy as it usually is. First you do not need to uninstall DX9.0b at all. Just hit this link http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html and download the standalone version of Service Pack 2 released August 2006. Believe me, even if your windows CD says SP2 already, you need this. Install this service pack and voila “regedit” now says DX version 9.0c. And this new service pack also improves the computer functionality. Check it out everybody.
