Do I need to have Windows XP SP1 installed before I install SP2?
There is no need to have Windows XP SP1 before you install SP2.
Do I need to have Windows XP SP1 installed before I install SP2?
[/al_question]
Nope. Service packs are cumulative, meaning that they roll-up all fixes
that came before them into a single package. I expect SP1 will be hard to find
after SP2 has been out for a while because it’ll no longer be needed.

Can I reinstall Windows XP SP1 over Windows XP SP2? - I’m afraid you probably answered your own question. Installing SP1 on top of SP2 should not work. To be honest, I’m surprised that installing SP1 on top of SP2 didn’t give you some kind of error message. But if it succeeded … well, that’s just not good.
Just what service packs do I need? - SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP? SP1 or SP2 for Vista? For now, at least, which one do you need, and will that last? I'll look at the confusing combinations.
How do I remove Windows XP SP2? - There are two ways to get Windows XP SP2. One of them can be removed, and the other cannot. I’ll bet you can see where this is headed, can’t you? And, as you’ll see in a moment, you really don’t want to remove it anyway.
Will SP2 Crash my machine? - The chances of SP2 crashing your machine is low, but here are a few precautions to take before installing that will help you avoid a potential crash.
if i burrn sp2 to a disk and reformat my computer, do i need to get other updates before i can install sp2? or can i just directly install sp2 without other updates?
MY XP RECENTLY CRASHED AND I REINSTALLED AFTER FORMATTING AND I HAVE A SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE–IT CAN NOT BE SEEN–SEAGATE TOLD ME I NEED THE 1394 HOST CONTROLLER FOR IT TO WORK–IS THIS CORRECT AND IS THAT HOST CONTROLLER IN SP1 OR SP2

That host control is in Windows XP itself. If you have the hardware to support it, that is. Try running the “add new hardware” wizard and see if a re-scan finds it.
I have windows xp pro 64 bit and service pack 2..when trying to re hook up my canon mf4150 my pc will not recognize my printer. This whole system used to work perfectly before I had to reload my xp program..after a ‘boot loop’..problem..at the bottom of the Canon driver page it says..’ USB 2.0 Hi-Speed requires Windows XP SP1 or Windows 2000 SP4′..could this be my problem…ahhhhhhhhhh help..Steve
Did it ever work with this system? If not I’d suspect that there are no XP 64-bit drivers for this printer. You’ll need to contact the printer manufacturer to see if your configuration is supported at all. (Printer drivers are a common issue with older 64bit systems.)
Thanks for the reply..yes the system all worked together, recently..I have grabbed the drivers, tool thing, and firm ware off the Canon site..all designed for the xp pro 64 bit..the pc will not ‘see’ the mf machine..the usb port is good and I have to assume the cable is ok since it worked last week..any other suggestion would be appreciated..figure this out and I’ll get you a giant Latte..S
my audio driver is not gettin installed!!! is it because i have directly installed xp sp2 and not sp1??
No, as the article states you did not need SP1 to install SP2. There’s something else going on, but there’s not enough information here to make a guess.
I crashed my computer and reloaded XP, but I did not have any of the updates backed up. I cannot download anything. I can’t even get on the Microsoft site. I SP3 on disk, but a message tells me that I must have SP1 installed. Now, since SP1 is not needed if I install SP2, can I get SP2 on cd-rom?

Service Packs for Windows are cumulative. Not however for Microsoft Office. Go figure.

The article answers this. If it’s unclear please let me know.

You would: install XP, install SP2, then visit Windows update for the post-SP2 updates.

I have SP2 installed. Windows Update says I need to install high priority update: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. Why?
