I’ve got a Hotmail account that I don’t use anymore because I got lots of
junk mails. If I don’t sign into the account and if I do not open any of the
junk mail files, can the junk mails take up any memory or space on my
computer?
In this excerpt from
Answercast #53, I look at how Hotmail as an internet-based program does
not download email files to your computer.

Hotmail on your computer
No. Hotmail is a web-based service. It only interacts with your
computer – and even then, only within the browser if you login to
Hotmail. If you visit the website.
As long as you don’t login to Hotmail then:
-
There is nothing that’s going to come to your computer.
-
There’s nothing that’s going to get downloaded to your computer.
-
There’s nothing that’s going to take up any space or any memory on your
computer.
Close the account
What you’re doing is probably the right thing. If you actually don’t want to
use a Hotmail account anymore, simply stop logging in. Eventually, the account
will get closed for you automatically and it will just stop working.
So, don’t go login to it and you should be just fine.

However, if you have an email program on your computer (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) that is set to automatically download your Hotmail mail, the Hotmail account in your program must be deactivated or it will continue downloading the spam.
