Term: encryption – symmetric

Symmetric encryption, sometimes known as shared-key encryption, uses a single key or password to both encrypt and decrypt data. Data encrypted using a given password can be decrypted using the same password. This implies that for sensitive data, the password needs to be kept secure to prevent accidental disclosure, giving others the ability to decrypt the encrypted data.
